Serigraph Fine Art Printing for Limited Editions

Serigraph fine art printing is the foundation of Kolibri Art Studios. For over 35 years, master printer Sergei Lazutin and the Kolibri team have pushed what’s possible in hand-pulled serigraphy, combining old-world craftsmanship with a fully modern production workflow.

We partner with established artists, galleries, and art publishers to create limited-edition serigraphs that are designed to be collector-grade from day one: technically precise, visually rich, and consistent across every print in the edition..

For artists seeking archival pigment output, we also offer giclée printing using museum-grade materials.

Why Serigraphy?

Serigraphy is the choice when an artwork needs more than a flat reproduction. By separating the image into multiple screens and inks, we can build depth, texture, and nuance that standard digital printing simply can’t match.

Artists, galleries, and publishers choose serigraphy when they want:

  • Multi-layer, hand-crafted color with visible richness and depth

  • Thick, saturated inks that sit on the surface of the paper or panel

  • Texture and dimensionality that enhances the original artwork

  • A limited edition that feels truly original, not just “printed”

At Kolibri, we treat each edition as a long-term asset for the artist and publisher, not just a job on the press.

The Kolibri Serigraphy Process

We’ve refined our serigraphy workflow over decades to ensure each edition is consistent, archival, and visually exceptional:

1. Color & Separation

Color is critical to Kolibri’s success. Our studio artists and chromists are masters of color separation and color matching. We evaluate the original artwork (or high-resolution scan) to determine how each color, gradient, and texture will be built up in layers.

  • Hand and digital color separations tuned for serigraphy

  • Careful planning of how colors interact when stacked

  • Proof stages to validate color, value, and contrast before full production

2. Screens & Materials

Kolibri uses high-quality screens and archival substrates selected for each project. Working from black-ink acetates or digital films, we create stencils that isolate each color from the original artwork.

  • Custom screens prepared for each layer

  • Archival papers, boards, and canvases suited to fine art editions

  • Tight registration controls to keep every print in perfect alignment

3. Printing & Quality Control

Each color is mixed, tested, and hand-pulled by our serigraphy team. We monitor ink density, drying, and alignment throughout the run to ensure consistency from print to print.

  • Hands-on supervision by master printers for every run

  • Continuous inspection during printing and curing

  • Detailed documentation for future re-runs or companion editions

4. Finishing Touches

With our unique combination of equipment and skills, we can add special touches directly within the serigraphy process or as additional passes:

  • Texture brushstrokes and relief effects

  • Metallic and specialty colors

  • Protective UV varnishes

  • Glitters and other visual accents

These techniques can also be combined with giclée printing for hybrid projects where a digital base layer is enhanced by serigraph overlays.

The Art of Creating Art

    COLOR

Color in serigraphy is an art form in itself. At Kolibri, each hue is hand-separated, hand-mixed, and proofed to preserve the exact character of the original artwork. Our process goes far beyond digital correction: every layer of ink is evaluated for density, translucency, and interaction with the paper beneath it. This is how we achieve the rich tonal range, tonal depth, and faithful chromatic accuracy that collectors expect from true limited-edition serigraphs. From subtle gradients to bold saturated fields, our color work is built to endure and to keep the artist’s intent intact.

    SCREENS

Every serigraph begins with its screens, the technical backbone of the process. Kolibri’s screens are created in-house using precise mesh counts tailored to each color layer, image detail, and print size. We work with both traditional film positives and modern digital separations, depending on what best preserves the artwork’s texture and line quality. The result is crisp detail, smooth ink layered down, and perfect registration across even the most complex multi-layer prints. This craftsmanship is what allows us to maintain consistency from the first print to the last.

    FINISHING TOUCH

Finishes are where a serigraph truly becomes a collectible. Kolibri offers a wide range of hand-applied effects: including varnishes, gloss accents, matte layers, metallics, pearlescent inks, and textured embellishments. Finishes add dimensionality and presence to the final print. They not only elevate the artwork visually, they also protect the piece and give it the museum-grade quality our clients expect. Whether subtle or bold, each finish is custom-designed to enhance the artist’s style and bring a unique tactile element to the edition.

Who We Work With

Kolibri works primarily with:

  • Artists who have established audiences and want to develop high-value limited editions of their work

  • Galleries that represent artists and need a production partner capable of handling complex, large-scale projects

  • Publishers running multi-artist or multi-title programs where consistency, reliability, and quality are non-negotiable

Our clients often sell their limited editions at four- and five-figure price points per print, and they rely on us to match that level of value with our craftsmanship and production standards.

We are not a general print shop and we don’t compete on quick one-off prints. Instead, we focus on long-term relationships with artists, galleries, and publishers who see serigraphy as a strategic part of their business.

Getting Started with a Serigraph Edition

If you’re considering a serigraph edition, the best next step is a conversation. We can discuss:

  • The artwork you’d like to reproduce (originals or existing scans)

  • Target edition size, format, and pricing strategy

  • Whether a pure serigraph, a hybrid serigraph+giclée, or an enhanced giclée is the best fit

  • Timelines, proofing, and any specialty finishes you’re interested in

If you’re ready to begin a project, reach out through our contact page and our team will guide you through the serigraphy process step by step.

You can also call us directly at (310) 538-4855 to speak with someone about your project.

Award Winning Large-Format Limited Editions

At Kolibri, we specialize in producing large-format limited editions at a scale few studios in the world can match: typically 100 to 300+ serigraphs, often at sizes up to 60″ × 40″. Printing at this level requires an extraordinary combination of expertise, equipment, and discipline.

Most print shops struggle to maintain clean registration and uniform color density beyond 10 or 15 layers, especially in large formats; at Kolibri, however, complex artworks requiring 40, 60, or even 100 individual colors are routine. Every layer is pulled with the same precision as the first, ensuring that the final print in the edition matches the very first.

Quality and Environment

Our commitment to quality extends through to the end of the process: every print is inspected, documented, and packaged using climate-controlled, chemical-free, environmentally responsible materials to guarantee integrity from press to delivery.

As a California-based operation, Kolibri adheres to strict VOC and environmental regulations. We operate a chemical-free serigraphy studio, using primarily water-based inks and materials, ensuring not only museum-grade results but also a responsible and sustainable production environment for our team, our clients, and the artwork itself.
